How Congress represents a state

Congress has two parts, or "chambers." Every state is represented in both, but in different ways.

2U.S. Senators

Every state gets 2, no matter how many people live there. They represent the whole state and serve 6-year terms.

14U.S. Representatives

Seats are based on population, counted by the census every 10 years. Each one represents a district and serves a 2-year term.

16Total members from NC

North Carolina grew enough to gain a 14th House seat after the 2020 census.

Answer in complete sentences. Two or three sentences each is enough.

1. Why does every state have 2 senators, but states have different numbers of representatives?
2. Pick one issue you care about. Write a short message you could send to your representative about it.
